How to improve the Jasman Gunslinger Shooting Gallery (and triple its' price!) |
Here is an ad for the shooting game. I bought mine at Target for $19.99. It uses an infrared transmitter in the gun and receivers in the log, not laser like the ad says. It is a really nice cheap, simple and fun game but the problem is that it doesn't have any purpose or goal as a game for competition. I decided to fix that! What this game needs is a timer. Then it becomes a competition for who is the fastest gunslinger. A timer will make all the difference with turning this neat concept into a competitive game. But the only stop watch timer I could find that had external trigger inputs was a kit that costs around $34! Wow, spending $34 to fix a $20 game! I got the timer at "electronics123". It is called the k148 4-digit Timing Module plus a Stopwatch with Pause firmware k148 (T2). It was worth it. Plus I got to build another electronic kit, I really like re-visiting the old Heathkit feeling of assembling an electronic kit. |

Once you take the screws out of the backside it separates into two pieces. Inside is the mechanism and electronics. Here is a closeup of the left side actuator for two of the eject pins. It uses a motor to drive a gear that moves a link side to side to trip the latches that let the spring loaded pins eject the bottle/can. What I needed to do is to add switches to the first and last pins. That way a signal would be sent to a timer for the beginning and end of the game. Here is the starting switch I added. It contacts the sliding link only for the direction that trips the first eject pin. You can see in the photo the two black lines that show how far the link slides to trip the pin. |

This is the back of the game and the stop watch timer I added. I used RCA phono cables to connect the two new switches to the timer. |
